Aki KURODA

Born in 1944 in Kyoto, Aki Kuroda has lived and worked in France for the past 30 years. Noticed since 1980 for his silhouettes and his monochrome paintings, he surprises through the richness of his creation. His work never ceases to inspire people of letters, from Marguerite Duras to Pascal Quinard. The diversity of his creations (set designer for the ballet, director, review editor) makes him a multifaceted artist. Since 1976, Aki Kuroda has participated in numerous collective expositions, including the 11th Paris Biennial (1980), and has benefited from numerous personal expositions both in France (Maeght Gallery, Centre d’Art Contemporain de Troyes) and in Japan (National Museum of Modern Art of Tokyo and Osaka).

First noticed in 1980 for his exhibition “Darkness” at the Maeght Gallery and at the 11th Paris Biennial, Aki Kuroda has continued to create extremely diversified works. Constantly re-inspired by his surroundings, he picks a path between various worlds: modernism and contemporary art, East and Occident, body and cosmos, mythology and future. Although best known for his monochromic series and his caryatid and the minotaur paintings, he also works in other media: engraving, sculpture, fresco, photography, scenery and scenography, and installations. Since the Nineties he has worked on an idea that he calls “Cosmogarden” (Garden of Cosmos): a series of performances in which he collaborates with artists working in fields such as contemporary dance or architecture.

Aki KURODA
